Sina Entertainment Interview
(November 24, 2005)
Q: Welcome everyone, and next to me, we have Harry Potter's first crush and that is Cho Chang, Katie Leung. Welcome Katie!
Katie: Thank you for letting me come.
Q: Can you maybe first say hello to the Sina friends?
Katie: Hello everyone! Hello my Chinese friends, thank you for asking me to come! (saying this in Chinese)
Q: We know that you attended premieres in various countries for this movie and you can see the how each fan from different countries like Harry Potter, how do you feel about this?
Katie: It's very touching. I think that's why we decided to make films of the books. If it wasn't for the support of the HP fans, it wouldn't be so excited, and plus I think if you don't go to the premieres, you'll never feel the warmth given from the HP fans , that feeling is just very touching and you feel excited at the same time.
Q: I'm looking forward tonight when you'll meet with our Chinese fans, what kind of interaction do you wish to have with them?
Katie: I'm really really excited to meet all the fans. Having known that far away in China, there's so many fans of Harry Potter, it makes me feel happy. And as a Chinese, meeting with them, the feeling will be great.
Q: A lot fo people think you're a very lucky girl, standing out from thousands of girls. Look back at those times; the audition, what part made you never forget?
Katie: It was when I first met Mike Newell, because we were doing a drama workshop and there were a lot of children there. I was performing there, and when I was, there was this man that kept on coming in and out of the place. It made me lost track of what I was doing. I was thinking at the time "Who is that man? Always buzzing in and out?" and later I found out that it was the director Mike Newell. That made me very nervous yet a bit excited.
Q: To you, since you never had any acting experience before, what was the most hardest thing you had to go through when you were filming?
Katie: I think it was when I first met the cast because they were famous. Before, I was a HP fan and I watched them grow up from the movies. When I saw them in real life, it made me freak out and scared since they were stars. But later, we became really good friends. And acting with friends was much more relaxing. Before I always thought that they were professional and I was just a extra but after becoming friends, it was much more relaxing.
Q: In this film. there is a kissing scene, in the next one, are you excited for this scene? What kind of feeling do you have? Excited?
Katie: I'm excited but I'll also feel awkward because usually, when two people kiss, one hundred or so people won't be staring at you. And plus, we might have to redo the scene again and again until it's the best. Yes, I'm excited for the kissing scene, being able to kiss one of the world's famous boy actor.
Q: Going on through the books, Harry and Cho break up. Do you think it's a pity that they did? What do you see in this kind of relationship?
Katie: It is a pity that they didn't end up together, but it's a fair choice because Cho really only liked Cedric but unfortunetly Cedric died so Cho became really depressed and very moody, emotional.
Q: In the film, there were three costumes [at the Yule Ball], which were all very pretty, which one did you like the best?
Katie: I don't really know, because all three were very special and of course all these outits were measured out to fit us just right. However, if you want me to choose one, I'll definitely choose mine since I think it looked beautiful.
Q: Now when you look back at the film, are you satisfied with it? Are you willing to stay in the acting business?
Katie: I'm very satisfied with my performance. I never really ask myself how I did and I'm really picky with myself. I really wish to hear from my family's opinions becasue they're the only ones that say the truth to me. And of course, GOF made my understand acting more and maybe I'll consider to continue acting.
Q: A fan has a question: In this film, there are a lot of [computerized] props, do you mostly talk to the props and not talk to people as much?
Katie: for me, I don't have a lot of those kinds of scenes. I mostly have scenes with Harry but there was one scene with the Goblet of Fire. We had to pretend that we were very excited and that was the time rest your acting skils. Harry had a lot of those scenes, you know, with the dragons and such.
Q: As Cho Chang, a Chinese girl who Harry is attracted to, do you have anything in common with Cho?
Katie: Tell you the truth, Harry doesn't really understand Cho. So maybe Harry was attracted to only how pretty she looked. If I haven't mistaken, in the fifth book when Harry and Cho were on their first date, Cho was very moody so that made Harry not like her that much since he also had things to worry about. In this one, Harry asks her to the ball and when Cho rejected him, she was a bit embarrassed. She already has a boyfriend, Cho's very loyal and sincere. I think that's what we have in common.
Q: The HP books haven't finished yet and we're all waiting to know the ending. Do you imagine a happy ending?
Katie: I hope there is a happy ending, I also hope no one else dies because in this one, someone dies and it makes people feel really bad. I just hope the ending will be happy.
Q: A lot of people say Katie doesn't know Chinese, since you're in China, do you want to learn Chinese?
Katie: I don't know Manderin but when I'm at my parents at home speak Cantonese so I also sometimes speak it too but it's not my first language so I never speak it in public. I really want to learn. It's quite funny actually, I'm 18 this year and I never learned how. If I had time I will definitely go to a Chinese school and learn to read and write.
Q: People also say you really like music, do you have maybe a plan to have an album out?
Katie: I don't know. But everytime when I sing at home, my brother always tells me to shut up, so having an album out probably isn't a good idea, I'm more focused on acting right now.
Q: What's you plans for the future? Has it changed since you made this film?
Katie: I'm not really sure, I just want to live my life happy, having a happy job; just one that can make me happy for the rest of my life.
Q: Some fans ask if you would give a score, how do you think you've done in the movie?
Katie: I really don't know and like I said before, I never ask myself how I act. So maybe 11? (laughs), If I had to give a score, then maybe in the middle, about 5.
Q: Have you ever since Chinese films? Do you have any favorite Chinese actors or directors?
Katie: Of course Stephen Chow. I think he's one of the funniest actors and he's a great director. I watched "Kung Fu Hustle" a while ago with my English friends and they were laughing their heads off!
Q: Do you ever wish to maybe have a film that includes Mainland or Hong Kong directors/actors?
Katie: I really hope there's a chance like that, but there is a little problem, I don't know Chinese.
Q: That's okay, I believe after learning it for a while, it'll be fine.
Katie: Thank you.
Q: The three main actors were unable to come here can you maybe say how they're like outside the set?
Katie: They're all very normal kids, going to work with them is great. When I first saw them I thought they're all probably keep everything to themselves since they're big stars, hoping to have their privacy but really they're just teenagers. And all of them are very smart. Dan's smart and has a great sense of humor, Emma is also very smart and has a unique fashion sense. Overall, they're just normal kids and working with them was a great experience.
Q: A lot of people who never saw GOF wonder how this is different from the last three films?
Katie: It's more darker than the other films and now more people from different ages can watch. People from the films are growing up, the HP fans are growing up, and in this film, there's some scenes where you might meet in real life. For example, the romantic scenes, when Harry and Ron fight, it happens often in real life. This film makes people understand some things that might not happen to them, that's why this is my favorite movie.
Q: We'll wrap up for now. Thank you so much Katie for coming, thank you!
Katie: Thank you!
Q: Hope you'll come again soon!
